Willie Dean Thompson

Willie Dean Thompson, affectionately known as “Dean,” was born on August 20, 1963, in Spartanburg, SC, to the late Alice Lee Thompson and the late Oscar Thompson. He was educated at the Charles Lea Center in Spartanburg, where he developed connections and friendships that became a meaningful part of his life.

Dean possessed a warm and outgoing personality that naturally drew people to him. A true people person, he enjoyed being surrounded by family and friends and was often considered the life of the party. His sweet spirit, lively personality, and ability to bring joy into a room made him someone people genuinely enjoyed being around.

One of Dean’s favorite pastimes was watching football, especially when his beloved Carolina Panthers were playing. Whether enjoying the excitement of the game or simply spending time with those he loved, Dean appreciated the simple pleasures of life. He was also well known for his cornbread, a family favorite that became one of the special things people associated with him.

Dean was a member of Messiah Baptist Church, where he shared in the fellowship and life of the church community.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Frederick Thompson; and sisters, Ada Durrah, Ella Mae Hughes, and Sarah Jackson.

Left to remember and honor his life are his wife of 21 years, Jenny Mae Thompson of the home; children, Willie Dean Thompson, Jr. of Landrum, SC and Stephanie Dawkins of Spartanburg, SC; siblings, Mary Long of Spartanburg, SC, Alice (David) Jackson of Chesnee, SC, Roberta Thompson of Chesnee, SC, Jaunita (Howard Gentry) Thompson of Greer, SC, and James Henry Thompson of Inman, SC; grandchildren, Kingston Gassaway, Arianna Gassaway, Aaron Gassaway, Kera Thompson, and Ezyiion Thompson; special niece, Chrystal (Kenneth) McDowell; special cousins, William (Emma Blomquist) Melvin and Nicholas Melvin; and a host of other relatives and friends.

On Wednesday, August 5, 2026, Willie Dean Thompson transitioned at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. Though his earthly journey has come to a close, the laughter he shared, the kindness he extended, and the memories he created will remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. Dean’s presence will be deeply missed, but his memory will continue to bring smiles to the many lives he touched.
