Willie James Robinson

Deacon Willie James Robinson, affectionately known as "Swellie" to his family and friends, was born on January 2, 1949, in Duncan, SC, to the late Mary Wallace Robinson and the late Bubba T. Downs. He was educated in the Spartanburg County School System and graduated from Florence Chapel High School with the Class of 1967. Continuing his pursuit of education, he attended Allen University and Wofford College.

At an early age, Willie accepted Christ and joined Hopewell Baptist Church. As a young adult, he united with Cleveland Chapel Baptist Church, where he faithfully served for many years. During his tenure, he was ordained as a Deacon and later served as Chairman of the Deacon Ministry. His dedication to the ministry extended through his service as Chairman of the New Member Ministry, Sunday School Superintendent, and as a devoted member of both the Mass Choir and the All Male Choir. His steadfast commitment to the work of the Lord left a lasting impact on his church family.

Willie was a quiet and humble man whose greatest joy came from spending time with those he loved. He especially enjoyed traveling and shopping for his beloved grandchildren, always finding delight in bringing smiles to their faces. A gifted athlete, he played semi professional football for the Greenville Bulls for many years and later invested in the lives of countless young people by coaching little league basketball, football, and baseball. He was an avid fan of the New York Yankees, the Carolina Panthers, and the Charlotte Hornets. Brown was his favorite color. Following many years of dedicated service, he retired from CSX/Norfolk Southern Railroad. He also proudly served his country in the United States Army.

In addition to his parents, Willie was preceded in death by his son, Willie James Robinson, II; and siblings, Alice Salter, Melissa Robinson, Mark Downs, Jeremiah Robinson, Nathaniel Robinson, and Leroy Robinson.

Left to cherish his life, love, and legacy are his devoted wife of fifty two years, Rosalyn Robinson of the home; his beloved children, Andre' (Tracy) Robinson of Spartanburg, SC, Rashad (Tiffany) Robinson of Charlotte, NC, and Leisha (Justin) Winston of Orlando, FL; grandchildren, Keonna Jones, Sean Robinson, Kenai Robinson, Seth Robinson, Kaiden Robinson, Jesiah Winston, Jeremiah Winston, Spencer Robinson, Jacobi Winston, and Jaden Winston; great grandchildren, Toray Jones and Roenia Jones; nephew and son, Antwan Spicer; his best friend, Billy Landrum; special niece, Betty J. Wilkins; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, dear friends, and all whose lives were enriched by his presence.

On Tuesday, June 23, 2026, Deacon Willie James Robinson peacefully entered into eternal rest at PMC Novant Health following an extended illness. Though he has departed this earthly life, his unwavering faith, gentle spirit, devoted service, and enduring love for his family and community will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. His memory will be cherished, and he will be deeply missed.
