Robert Joseph Cain, lovingly known as "Bobby Joe," was born June 14,1946 to the late Mary Elizabeth Cain Whiteside and Leroy Whiteside in Dickerson County, Virginia. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1964 and continued his education at Long Beach State College. Robert proudly served his country in the United States Navy and received an honorable discharge.
He was a warm and generous soul who would give you the shirt off his back. He enjoyed sports and especially loved watching the Lakers and the Dodgers.
Robert was preceded in death, along with his parents, by his sisters Patricia Bomar and Gwendolyn Whiteside.
Left to cherish precious memories are his children, Dwayne (Michelle) Byrd of Charlotte, North Carolina and Brandy Cain of Natchitoches, Louisiana. He is also survived by his siblings, Leroy Whiteside of Spartanburg, South Carolina, Billy Whiteside of Spartanburg, South Carolina, Robert (Vivian) Whiteside of Inman, South Carolina, Johnny Whiteside of Spartanburg, South Carolina, and Ronnie White of Washington, District of Columbia. His legacy lives on through his grandchildren, Courtney Perry of Greer, South Carolina, Brianna Petty of Spartanburg, South Carolina, Dwayne Byrd, II of Virginia, Simeon Byrd of Greer, South Carolina, Hezekiah Byrd of Greer, South Carolina, Kimani Cain of Natchitoches, Louisiana, Trent Byrd of Spartanburg, South Carolina, Jalen Byrd of Spartanburg, South Carolina, and Kimberly Cain of Natchitoches, Louisiana. He also leaves behind his aunts, Estella Cain of Saluda, South Carolina and Shirley Cain of Columbia, South Carolina, along with a host of other relatives and friends.
On Monday, December 1, 2025, Robert quietly transitioned at the Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. His presence, love, and kindness will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
