IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mattie Lou
Philson
January 25, 1950 – April 17, 2025
Mattie Lou Philson was born on January 25, 1950, to the late Georgeanna Floyd Murphy and the late Robert Murphy. She was raised in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, where she proudly attended Carver High School.
A dedicated and hard-working woman, Mattie retired from BMG Music, where she served as a supervisor. Her presence, leadership, and vibrant personality left a lasting impression on all who worked with her.
Mattie had a deep love for music, especially R&B and old school, with James Brown holding a special place in her heart. She also had a talent for sewing, creating everything from stylish clothing to church choir robes with her own hands. Her favorite colors were purple and red, both of which reflected the richness and warmth of her spirit. She also loved to sit back and enjoy watching her favorite shows and spending quiet moments reflecting and relaxing.
She leaves to cherish her memory her loving husband, Benny Philson, Sr. of the home; son Benny (Danielle) Philson, Jr. of Spartanburg, SC; daughters, Jacqueline (Jim) Osborne of Spartanburg, SC, and Capucine Philson of Thailand; her brother, Henry (Catherine) Sims, Jr. of Spartanburg, SC; her sisters, Pollie Gentry of Moore, SC, Shirley McKissick and Joyce Sims both of Spartanburg, SC; brothers-in-law, Jerry Philson and Larry Philson, Jr.; her stepfather, Henry Sims, Sr.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and dear friends.
Mattie Lou Philson's legacy is one of love, resilience, creativity, and joy. Her memory will forever remain in our hearts. On the morning of Thursday, April 17, 2025, Mattie transitioned peacefully at Upstate Hospice Home. She will be missed sorely, but her light will continue to shine through the lives she touched.
