IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Matilda
Rogers
April 8, 1933 – May 28, 2025
Ms. Matilda "Tillie" Cunningham Rogers, formerly of Roebuck, quietly slipped away to be with her Lord on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at her home in Augusta, GA at the age of 92 years old.
Tillie was born to the late Jesse and Christiana Neal Cunningham on April 8, 1933, in Ozark, Alabama. The family's move to Spartanburg, SC brought them closer to family in Union, SC. Despite attending segregated public schools in Spartanburg County, Tillie excelled in her academics. She graduated from the famed Carver High School, as Valedictorian of the class of 1951. Years later Tillie would be instrumental in spearheading & organizing reunions for all classes.
The Cunningham family was a family of faith. Coming from a family of faith, Tillie was immersed in rendering service to her church, Trinity A.M.E. Church of Spartanburg. Trinity A.M.E. was a lively and committed community. It was at Trinity where Tillie's gift of singing was encouraged. Singing solo or with her sister Martha, she received recognition. After Trinity A.M.E. closed its doors, she joined her beloved Friendship Baptist Church.
Tillie attended and graduated from Allen University in Columbia, SC, with a B.A. degree in education in 1955. While at Allen, she pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. Having seen the examples of her parents, Tillie began her teaching career and ended her teaching career in Spartanburg County District 7 Public Schools. For many years she taught, encouraged and mentored thousands of students. She retired in 1999
As with everything she did, Tillie was fully committed to her family, church and sorority. Her only child, Reginald, was the apple of her eye. She never missed any of his games from elementary age through high school. No matter where, she was there. She was always showing up to events that were important to him and his family. During his final days she was by his side, mothering, loving and singing over him. She was so proud to be a grandma and great grandma too.
Tillie loved her new church home, Friendship Baptist Church. It was all about service. She held many positions, served on committees, sang in choirs, and used her gifts of administration. She rendered faithful service until her health decline.
Tillie was always a lady. She modeled what a caring and devoted spirit looked like. She did not have conditions on her love. She was warm, talented, articulate, smart and so much more.
Tillie had numerous acquaintances, a few good friends but one best friend her sister Martha. When you saw one you usually saw the other.
In addition to her parents and son, she was preceded in death by her infant son Richard, former husband Oscar S. Rogers, Jr. (who built her a pink brick house), and her infant granddaughter, Martine Grace Rogers.
