Luther Thomas Clowney was born on September 11, 1930, in Union, SC, to the late Adolphus Clowney and Effie Talley Clowney. He was educated in the Union County public schools and built a life defined by hard work, faith, and service. For many years, Luther worked as a truck driver before retiring from Milliken after years of dedicated employment.

In April 1951, Luther answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army. He proudly served during the Korean War until receiving an honorable discharge in January 1953. His military service earned him the Bronze Service Star and the United Nations Service Medal. In recognition of his faithful service and sacrifice, he was inducted into the Hall of Heroes Class of 2024 by the Spartanburg Regional Office of Veterans Affairs. He was also a proud member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9349.

Luther was known for his warm and talkative personality. He enjoyed traveling, meeting people, and never met a stranger. An entrepreneur at heart, he owned and operated a custom fire log business that reflected his strong work ethic and determination.

A devoted man of faith, Luther was a member of Friendship Baptist Church, where he faithfully served as a deacon. His quiet strength, humble spirit, and commitment to God and family were evident throughout his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Adolphus and Effie Talley Clowney; his sister, Josephine Dogan; and his brother, Lewis Clowney.

Left to cherish his precious memories and celebrate his remarkable legacy are his children, Thomas L. Clowney of Roebuck, SC, Bertha (Frankie) Smith of Spartanburg, SC, and Lorraine Calwile (Kelvin) of Roebuck, SC; his grandchildren, Tiffany Smith, Tony Smith, Casey Calwile, and Jada Calwile; his great grandson, Tyler Smith; his niece, Diane (Luther) Smith; his nephews, John (Annie) Clowney, Nathaniel (Vera) Dogan, Keith Dogan, and Terry Smith; together with a host of other loving relatives, dear friends, and all whose lives were enriched by knowing him.

On Saturday, July 11, 2026, Luther peacefully entered eternal rest at Hospice of the Foothills in Landrum, SC. While his presence will be deeply missed, his life of faith, honor, and service leaves a lasting legacy that will forever be cherished by all who knew and loved him.
