Lou Jessie Rookard

Lou Jessie Rookard was born on September 4, 1957, in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, to the late Rosa Mae Canty and the late Marion Canty. She was a precious gift whose life reflected compassion, quiet strength, and unwavering love for God, family, and those blessed to know her. She was educated in the Spartanburg County School District and attended Dorman High School.

Lou possessed a warm and welcoming spirit that made every person feel valued. She never hesitated to lend a helping hand, offer an encouraging word, or open her heart to someone in need. Her kindness was genuine, her smile was comforting, and her generosity became one of the defining characteristics of her beautiful life.

A devoted wife, loving mother, and proud grandmother, Lou found her greatest joy in the people she loved. Her heart belonged to her husband and family, and the memories they created together became the treasured fabric of her life. She also delighted in traveling, listening to gospel music, and filling her home with the comforting aromas of home cooked meals. An exceptional cook, she was especially known for her soul food, while her famous coconut cake and red velvet cake became beloved favorites among family and friends. During quiet moments, she enjoyed watching classic television shows such as Gunsmoke, The Andy Griffith Show, and other timeless programs from that era. Her favorite colors were coral and black, reflecting both the vibrancy and elegance that characterized her life.

Above all, Lou loved the Lord. She faithfully served as a dedicated member of Greater Bibleway Miracle Temple, where her life became a testimony of humble service and steadfast faith. She faithfully labored in the Usher Ministry, lifted her voice in the choir, and compassionately ministered through the Sick and Shut In Ministry. She understood that true greatness is found in serving others, and she carried out every assignment with grace, humility, and love.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Rosa Mae Canty and Marion Canty, and her brother, Louis Canty.

Left to celebrate her life, cherish her love, and carry forward her beautiful legacy are her devoted husband of 53 years, Kenneth L. Rookard of the home; her beloved daughter, Maya (Nashon) Rookard McPherson of Atlanta, GA; siblings, Rosa (Dogan) Shands of Spartanburg, SC, Nellie Vernon of Inman, SC, Eleanor Anderson of Inman, SC, and Charles Canty of Inman, SC; cherished granddaughters, Margo McPherson and Nora McPherson of Atlanta, GA; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and dear friends whose lives were forever enriched by her love.

On Tuesday, June 30, 2026, Lou peacefully exchanged time for eternity at Spartanburg Medical Center. Though her gentle voice has grown silent and her earthly journey has come to its close, the fragrance of her love, the warmth of her kindness, and the enduring witness of her faith will continue to bloom in the hearts of those she leaves behind. Her life was a beautiful melody of service, sacrifice, and unconditional love. While she will be deeply missed, her legacy will forever live on in the countless lives she touched and in the precious memories that time can never erase.
