A Life of Faith, Love, and Service

Proverbs 31:28 – "Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her."

Her Humble Beginnings

Gladys McWhorter Miller was born on September 9, 1927, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, the beloved fifth child of the late Rosa and Guy McWhorter. She was a proud product of Foster Chapel School in Roebuck, SC, where she laid the foundation for a life dedicated to faith, family, and service.

A Union of Love

Gladys found a lifetime of love and companionship in her husband, Deacon William Miller. Together, they built a strong and faithful home, blessed with three beautiful children. Their love extended beyond their family into their community, as they became pillars of Foster Chapel Baptist Church. Her unwavering faith led her to serve diligently within the church, making a lasting impact on all who knew her.

A Dedicated Career

A woman of resilience and dedication, Gladys worked tirelessly to provide for her family and serve others. She spent years as a machine operator at Firestone, demonstrating her strong work ethic and commitment to excellence. Later, she transitioned into a role of compassion and care as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Mountainview Nursing Home, where she touched countless lives with her kindness and dedication. Throughout her career, she remained steadfast in her integrity, always striving to make a difference in the lives of those around her.

A Life of Service

Matthew 23:11 tells us, "But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant." Gladys embodied this scripture in every aspect of her life. A woman of unwavering faith and compassion, she was always ready to extend a helping hand to family, friends, and her community.

As a devoted deaconess and choir member, she joyfully uplifted the church through both song and service. Beyond the sanctuary walls, she enriched the lives of many as a dedicated member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a committed Girl Scout troop leader. Her generosity and nurturing spirit extended even further as she opened her heart and home to raise several foster children, providing them with love, stability, and guidance.

Cherished Pastimes

In her leisure time, Gladys found joy in caring for children, a reflection of her nurturing spirit. She loved singing hymns, her voice carrying melodies of faith and hope, and she found creative expression through painting. One of her greatest joys was offering spiritual wisdom to her family and friends, always ready with a word of encouragement, guidance, and love.

Those who went before

She was preceded in death, along with her parent, by her loving husband Deacon William Miller; daughter, Marion Miller; and siblings, Roberta Foster, John Henry McWhorter, JC McWhorter, Russell McWhorter and Sammie Lee Dennis.

Her Legacy Lives On

Left to cherish, celebrate, and continue her legacy are her devoted children, Ruth McCullough of Spartanburg, SC; James "Ed" (Mattie) Miller of Roebuck, SC, and Geraldine (AJ) Kelly of Roebuck, SC. She also leaves behind a loving legacy in her grandchildren: Sonja McCullough, Demetria Sawyer, Tamatha (Kenny) Jones, Latonya (Carl) Brown, Tara (Darius) Kershaw, Kendall Miller, Terrance "TJ" Britt, Ashley Miller, and Kenya Miller. Her impact extended beyond her immediate family, touching the lives of her cherished godchildren, Tommy (Shirley) Anderson of Jersey City, NJ, Debbie (Odell) Moore of Spartanburg, SC, Jackie Hadley of Atlanta, GA; and Tina Gloster of Atlanta, GA. She was blessed with fourteen great-grandchildren, twenty great-great-grandchildren, and two great-great-great-grandchildren, along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and dear friends.

A Peaceful Homegoing

On Monday, March 3, 2025, Gladys McWhorter Miller transitioned peacefully, surrounded by family at her home, after a long and courageous battle with dementia. Though she has departed from this world, her love, wisdom, and unwavering faith remain in the hearts of all who knew her.

Her legacy is one of faith, love, and selfless service. She touched the hearts of many, leaving an indelible mark that time cannot erase. Her memory will forever live on in the love she shared, the lessons she taught, and the lives she so beautifully touched.
