Obituary

Psalm 71:23 – "My lips will shout for joy, when I sing praises to you; my soul also, which you have redeemed."

A Humble Beginning ….

Gentle Johnson, son of the late Margie Ann Hunter Johnson and the late Willie James Johnson, affectionately known as "Gent", was born on June 18, 1938, in Spartanburg County. "Gent" was raised in the Woodruff community and matriculated through Spartanburg District 4 schools and was a 1956 graduate of New Bethel High School. While in high school, he excelled in football and baseball and was a bus driver. "Gent" retired from Old Dominion Trucking after forty years of service.

At an early age, he joined and was baptized at the Lower Shady Grove Baptist Church. He later joined Macedonia Baptist Church and sang on the All-Male Chorus. His parents instilled in him the worth of knowing Christ and following his example. As a result, "Gent" began to sing about the God of his salvation. He later formed his quartet group Gentle Johnson and the Gospel Melodyaires. From then until now, he and his group traveled the nation singing God's praises and lifting the spirits of many throughout the country.

He had a smooth and melodic voice that could warm the coldest soul. "Gent" and his group released over six musical projects that have been a blessing to many throughout the years.

Not only was he a singer and recording artist, "Gent" spent a plethora of years on the radio station in Woodruff, as well as Greer. His radio handle was "The Country Boy". He closed every broadcast with" I'm just a country boy trying to help somebody."
