Ernestine Bankhead was born to the late Agnes Lyles and the late Robert Lyles, in Spartanburg on January 11, 1951. She was educated in the Spartanburg County schools and graduated from Lincoln High School. She married Mr. William Bankhead and a storied love journey was written.

Ernestine was a humble and kind lady. She was noted for her lady-like demeanor. Ernestine was extremely tenacious and had an incredible positive attitude. She was a great cook, and her modest manner was a hallmark. Ernestine's favorite color was purple.

She was preceded in death, along with her parents, by siblings, Mary Sartor, Nancy Irby, Nora Lee Miller, Douglas Lyles, and Alfred Lyles.

She will be remembered and cherished by her loving husband, William Bankhead of the home; children, Carl Bankhead of Spartanburg, SC and Wendy Bankhead  of Charlotte, NC; stepchildren, Gerren Clowney,  Kurt Collins, Curtis Collins, Sonya Lipscomb all of Spartanburg, SC and Alex Collins of Virginia; brothers, Lee Authur Lyles and Marshell (Lavida) Lyles both of Spartanburg, SC; sisters, Roberta (Sylvester) Sims and Lillian (Michael) Wofford both of Spartanburg, SC; a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

On Sunday, June 25, 2023, she transitioned peacefully at her home. Her humble spirit will sorely be missed by her family and all who knew her.
