Obituary

On the evening of Wednesday, October 15, 2025, surrounded by grace and held gently by peace, Mr. Edward Leon Waddell completed his earthly journey at Spartanburg Medical Center. At the age of 76, he transitioned quietly in his sleep, leaving behind a legacy of faith, service, intellect, and love.

Born on March 7, 1949, in Chesnee, South Carolina, Edward was the beloved son of the late Haywood Waddell and the late Mattie Pearl Durrah Waddell. From the beginning, he walked a path of distinction and courage—becoming the first Black graduate of Chesnee High School, a milestone that opened doors for generations to follow. His thirst for knowledge and excellence led him to Benedict College, where he earned a degree in Biology and began a lifelong pursuit of purpose and truth.

A man of deep faith and unwavering commitment, Mr. Waddell served faithfully as a member of Mount Moriah Baptist Church. His resonant voice and generous spirit also touched the airwaves of WASC 1530 AM, where he shared inspiration, wisdom, and community connection as a beloved radio personality. Professionally, he served with integrity and compassion as a Corrections Officer, later retiring after many years of dedicated service.

Beyond his career and community roles, Edward Waddell was a mentor, a neighbor, and a friend to many. He gave freely of his time and heart, remaining active in various civic and faith-based organizations until his health no longer allowed.

He was preceded in death by his cherished sister, Elizabeth Waddell Monroe.

Those who will forever carry his memory include his devoted daughter, Dr. Amy Christina Waddell of Spartanburg, SC; his special niece, Lydia Pearl Monroe of Washington, DC; his stepdaughter, Kesha (Carsen) Hurst of Boiling Springs, SC; his stepson, Keith L. Manning of Manhattan, NY; and his brother, Frederick (M.) Waddell of Spartanburg, SC. He is also lovingly remembered by six grandchildren, a host of godchildren, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and countless friends whose lives were touched by his light.

In every space he entered, Edward Waddell brought kindness, intellect, and joy. His laughter echoed like music; his counsel was steady and sure. Though his voice is now silent, his legacy resounds—in his family, his faith, and the countless hearts he uplifted.

May his soul find rest in the eternal embrace of the One who called him home.
