Obituary

On March 2, 1947, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, the world was blessed with the life of Doris Jean Shelton, affectionately known as "Dot." She was the cherished daughter of the late Helen Williams and the late Willie Marshall, and from her earliest days she carried a warmth and gentleness that touched everyone around her.

Dot was educated in Spartanburg schools and graduated proudly from Carver High School in 1966. With a desire to continue her growth, she pursued higher education at Rutledge College and received an Associate Degree in Business Administration. Her determination and drive for success reflected her belief in always striving for more.

She devoted many years of her life to caring for others through her work as a home health aide. Her service was marked by patience, compassion, and respect for those she assisted. When she retired, she left behind not only a career of dedication but also a legacy of kindness that will remain in the hearts of the many lives she touched.

Dorothy devoted her life to faithfully serving her father, Willie Marshall, and her stepmother, Lorena Marshall. Out of love and dedication, she relocated to Charlotte to provide care for them, serving as their devoted caregiver until their passing.

Dot lived her life with sweetness, care, and a deep love for others. She found joy in fellowship and fun, especially in her love for playing bingo, where laughter often filled the room. Her favorite color was blue, a color that mirrored her calm and peaceful spirit.

Her faith was the foundation of her life. She was a devoted member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church where she worshiped faithfully and shared her gift of song as a member of the choir. Singing in the choir was a source of joy and a way for her to express her love for God. Her voice lifted in praise will be remembered as a blessing to all who heard it.

She was preceded in death, along with her parents, by her loving husband, Norman Shelton Jr.: siblings, Bobby Williams , Ladson Wilkes, and Beverly Wilkes, stepmother, Lorena Marshall, and great-granddaughter Queniya Shelton.

Left to celebrate and cherish her life and legacy are: her son, Reginald (Sheneka) Shelton of Spartanburg, South Carolina; daughters, Trena (Steve) Shelton of Boiling Springs, South Carolina and Pamela Williams (primary caregiver) of Moore, South Carolina; brother, James Wilkes of Asheville, North Carolina; sisters, Bernice (Robert) Evans of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Rosena (Aaron) Miller of Spartanburg, South Carolina, Sandra Williams of Boiling Springs, South Carolina, Peggy A. Williams of Spartanburg, South Carolina, and Rosa (Michael) Thomas of Spartanburg, South Carolina; nephews, reared in the home John Fredrick Williams and Ernest Williams; grandchildren reared in the home, Tyrone Roberson and Errika Shelton; fifteen grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren; caregiver George "Petey" Shelton; sisters in law, Elaine Williams and Gwendolyn Wilkes; goddaughter, Sassy McDowell;  and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

On Thursday, August 14, 2025, Doris transitioned peacefully, surrounded by family at her home. She will be missed deeply.

As we reflect on the journey of Doris Jean Shelton, we remember a woman who lived gracefully and loved deeply. Her story is written not only in the years she lived, but in the kindness she gave, the joy she spread, and the faith she carried. Though she has gone from our sight, the memory of her life and the love she shared will remain forever in the hearts of all who knew her.
