IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Doris
Martin
November 2, 1937 – February 12, 2026
Doris Jean Martin, 88, was born to the late Ruth Henry and James Henry on November 2, 1937, in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Doris Martin departed this beautiful life on February 12, 2026, surrounded by her loving family at Atlantic City Regional Medical Center.
Doris was a devoted wife of 66 years to the late Mark Martin Jr. of Spartanburg, South Carolina. She was a loving and nurturing mother to her six children and truly cherished the time she spent with family and friends.
Doris was an extremely hard worker who remained dedicated, loyal, and consistent in everything she did. In 1955, Doris moved to Atlantic City, New Jersey with her late mother, Ruth Henry, where she began building a life rooted in hard work and determination. She ventured into entrepreneurship by owning and operating a small sub shop in the Uptown area known as Delaware Subs. She later worked at Shulton's, and once Mark relocated to Atlantic City, the two worked part-time together on a military base. In July of 1981, Doris began her career at the Claridge Hotel, where she worked faithfully for 20 years. During her time there, she was recognized for her dedication and outstanding work ethic, earning Employee of the Month along with several other awards. Following the closing of the Claridge in 2002, Doris retired; however, retirement did not suit her well. Wanting to remain active, she soon returned to work, becoming a shuttle driver for a timeshare company and later working at Main Street Laundromat, where she continued for 18 years.
One thing about Doris, she truly believed in keeping herself busy. Doris loved to travel and was affectionately known by her family as their very own "walking GPS," as she could give directions to and from just about any location. She was always on the move and ready to go whenever you called her name. Bingo was one of Doris' favorite pastimes. She would often arrive hours early just to sit, socialize, and enjoy the company of her friends before the games began. Doris had a way with numbers and could skillfully manage up to seven bingo boards at a time. Her mind was sharp, and she never missed a beat. She also hosted a weekly Pokeno club at her home on Saturdays with her girlfriends. In her spare time, Doris enjoyed solving puzzles, playing scratch-offs, attending crab feasts, traveling, and treating herself to a little shopping, even if it meant buying things she didn't necessarily need. She was also known for her infamous cookouts that chartered buses of family from South Carolina to her home in Pleasantville, New Jersey. As the matriarch of her family, Doris embodied resilience, compassion, and unconditional love. She led with quiet strength and created a legacy rooted in faith, unity, and togetherness that will continue to live on through those she cherished most. She never missed an opportunity to show up for the people she loved, faithfully attending birthdays, graduations, and special occasions with a heart full of pride and encouragement. Doris made it a priority to be present, offering her love and support in celebration of every cherished milestone. Doris' heart was made of gold, and she didn't take any mess from anybody. Doris was a woman of faith whose life was a testament to love, sacrifice, and strength.
She poured into her children, grandchildren, and all those around her, leaving behind a legacy of unity and unwavering devotion. She was predeceased by her husband, Mark Martin Jr.; her parents, Ruth and James Henry of Spartanburg, South Carolina; her daughter, Cynthia Martin; her grandson, Jameel Martin; and her granddaughter, Kalilah Martin, all of Atlantic City, New Jersey. Doris leaves to cherish her fond memories: two daughters, JoAnn Henry of Atlanta, Georgia and Deborah Martin of Atlantic City, New Jersey; three sons, Michael (Shelly) Martin of Berlin, New Jersey, Dwayne (Selene) Martin of Atlantic City, New Jersey, and Jeffrey Martin of Pleasantville, New Jersey; 10 grandchildren; Brian, Patrice, Takenya, Michael Jr., Shammara, Michelle, Janay, Dwayne Jr., Jeffrey Jr., and Dupree; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great- grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
