Brianna Shieisha Zara Edwards, affectionately known as “ Bri and Zy ,” was born on January 26, 2001, in Spartanburg, SC, to LeVonda Gist. From the beginning, Brianna possessed a quiet and gentle spirit that would become one of the defining qualities of her life.
Brianna was educated in the Spartanburg County school system and was a graduate of Byrnes High School. A former praise dancer . She was employed with Kentucky Fried Chicken, where her pleasant personality and warm smile were a reflection of the sweet nature she carried wherever she went. She dreamed of joining the military. She also attended Ray of Hope Reconciliation church.
Quiet in nature, but rich in love, Brianna had a way of making those around her feel cared for. Her smile was constant, her heart was tender, and the words “I love you” were never difficult for her to say. She was diligent about checking on the people she loved, making sure they were doing well and reminding them that they mattered to her.
One of Brianna’s greatest joys was being a mother to her beloved son, Mateo who she called her tootie/ MJ. She loved him dearly, and the bond they shared held a special place in her heart. In her quieter moments, Brianna enjoyed reading and journaling, finding comfort in words and personal reflection and cuddling in the bed with her mom and watching movies. She also had an appreciation for the colors black and blue, which were among her favorites.
Brianna was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Avant Gist, Sr.
Those who remain to cherish her memory and honor her life include her loving mother, LeVonda Gist of Spartanburg, SC; beloved son, Mateo J. Martinez of the home; siblings, Malcolm Gist, Monikiqua Gist, Marjourrion Gist, Miadron (Michaela) Gist, and Miayunna Gist all of Spartanburg, SC; 13 nieces and nephews who she loved dearly an affectionately called her Auntie ZyZy. A special niece, Keyangel; special nephew, Chavontia; grandmother Wyommie Polzin; bonus grandmother, Lillie B Wilson; godparents, Carol Wright, Patrick and Tawanna Coker; 5 godsisters; 1 godbrother; godgrandparents Casey and Diane Jones; and a host of other relatives and friends.
On Sunday, August 30, 2026, Brianna’s earthly life gently came to a close. Though her years were far too few, the love she gave, the smile she shared, and the kindness she extended created memories that will remain with those who knew and loved her.
Brianna will be sorely missed, but her family will forever remember “Zy Zy” as the quiet, sweet soul who loved deeply, checked on those she cared about, and never hesitated to say, “I love you.” Her voice may now be absent, but the love behind those words will continue to echo in the hearts of her family and friends for years to come.
