IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Benjamin Reuben
Lyles
October 27, 1945 – August 9, 2024
Husband, Father, Hero & Friend
On Saturday, October 27, 1945, God blessed the late Clyde Lyles and Beatrice Means Lyles with their third child, Benjamin Reuben Lyles. He was born in Spartanburg, SC where he was raised in the home by his father and eldest sister, Ruby, after the untimely death of his mother. He completed his secondary education in the Spartanburg County School system and he received his diploma from Foster's Grove High School in 1966. He continued his pursuit for higher learning by attending Spartanburg Technical College where he earned an Associate's Degree in General Studies. Affectionately known as "Ben" to many, he exhibited traits associated with being a leader at a young age. His leadership qualities were demonstrated throughout his life.
On March 11, 1969, Ben enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he ultimately rose to the rank of Lance Corporal. During his deployment to Vietnam, his commitment and service earned him the following awards and decorations: Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, and Good Conduct Medal. While serving, he became a Tactical Baton Instructor. Ben's commitment to service did not end with his military service in Vietnam. Annually, Ben volunteered with the SFC Charles A. Judge, Jr. Memorial Stand Down (a day dedicated to providing free services and resources to homeless and at-risk veterans). He also volunteered at the Safe Passage Camp in support of children who lose parents to domestic violence. Ben served in multiple capacities to this endeavor: transportation, financial support and working directly with the campers.
After serving in the military, Ben began his career in law enforcement as a Police Officer with the City of Landrum in 1977. In the early 1980's, he joined the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Department. During his extensive career, Ben advanced to the rank of Sergeant and served 41 honorable years. During his tenure, he served in the following capacities: Uniform Patrol, Criminal Investigation Division, Warrant Investigation, Swat Team, Scuba Diver Rescue Team, and concluded with the Court Security Division.
At a young age, Ben accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He was baptized and joined Holden's Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. He later joined The Hope Church, formerly known as Restoration Church, where he served on the Usher Board and the Security Team.
On July 7, 2007, after a lifetime of separate paths, Ben married the love of his life, the former Natalie Yolanda Scott. On this perfect day, at seven o'clock in the evening, the two became one. Their union throughout the years was filled with wedded bliss, joy and happiness; a completion of their devotion and love to each other.
Even though Ben was known for his curt and no-nonsense personality, he was a humble and gentle soul. He possessed a stern, but approachable disposition. He was highly opinionated, and you never had to guess what he was thinking. He was quick to voice his thoughts, but this was counterbalanced by his love and devotion of service to the community. Ben had an enduring and selfless love for his wife, children, and family. He was the quintessential family man.
On any given day you could find Ben attending his garden, in his man-cave, sitting in his favorite chair watching sports, or surrounded by family and friends just talking and enjoying life. He was an avid fan of Tom Brady, Kobe Bryant, the New England Patriots, and L.A. Lakers. His man-cave was decorated with memorabilia of his favorite sports team and athletes. Just as Ben was extremely serious regarding his professional life; he enjoyed hunting, drag racing and weaponry.
On Friday, August 9, 2024, our Leader, Hero, Husband, Father and Friend, Ben, took the hand of our loving, merciful God and walked into the Glory of His presence. Ben is now resting in everlasting peace and we give thanks to God for allowing us to love and be loved by Ben during his time with us. He will surely be missed, but never forgotten because his legacy lives on in each that he touched.
Ben was preceded in death by his son, Anthony "Teencie" Lyles and brother, Charles Lyles.
Ben's life, love and memories will continue to be treasured by his devoted wife, Natalie, of the home; daughters, Annie (Kenneth) McAbee of Boiling Springs, SC, Kimberly Lyles of Spartanburg, SC, Kimberly Jones-Mills of Spartanburg, SC, Kelly Lyles of Spartanburg, SC and Erika Pitts of Charlotte, NC; brothers, Eugene Lyles of Boiling Springs, SC and Robert E. Hill of Atlanta, GA; sister, Ruby (Bobby) Hardy of Moore, SC; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two four-legged children, Gunnie and Tracy Lou; and a host of nieces, nephews, friends, extended family and colleagues.
As Ben would say, "We all have our day and mine has come….Ain't that some "J". This time "J" stands for Jesus and He has come to carry me home." "I'm Out! 10-4."
